Unplain vs Designrr

Both tools turn content into designed ebook PDFs. They divide the work differently. Designrr gives you a WYSIWYG page editor: you pick a template and arrange each page, which is why it also reaches ePub, Kindle and flipbook output. Unplain keeps the page layout automatic and gives you an editor for the content instead. You click any text to change it, insert headings, lists, images and buttons, and Unplain handles the cover, contents, pagination and branding around what you wrote.

The short version: with Designrr you own the page, with Unplain you own the content. That is the trade, and which side is better depends entirely on whether page-level control is worth the time it costs you.

Two ways to get content into Unplain

There are two ways into Unplain, and they cost the same. Bring the document yourself, or connect Unplain to Claude Code and Codex and ask your assistant to build the ebook on your account. Either way it lands as a real project you can open and edit, and your plan limits are identical. See how the Unplain MCP works .

Which one fits your work

Choose Unplain if

  • The writing is the work, and page layout is a chore you would rather not do.
  • You publish PDFs repeatedly and need them to look consistent every time.
  • You want reusable Brand Themes rather than restyling a template per document.
  • You want an AI assistant to be able to produce the document for you.

Choose Designrr if

  • You need ePub, Kindle or flipbook output, which Unplain does not produce.
  • You are repurposing existing blog posts or URLs, which Designrr imports directly.
  • You want control over each page's layout and are happy to spend the time.
  • You need a large stock template library to design against.

Frequently asked questions

Is Unplain a Designrr alternative?

Yes. Both turn content into designed ebook PDFs. The difference is what you edit. In Designrr you work on the page: you place and style elements on a template. In Unplain you work on the content, editing text in place and inserting headings, lists, images and buttons, while the page layout, pagination and table of contents stay automatic.

Can I edit text in Unplain, or only import it?

You can edit it. Click any heading, paragraph, quote or list item and type. You can also insert new blocks, add images with captions, and drop in clickable buttons. What Unplain does not hand you is the page canvas: it decides where things sit and how they break across pages, so the document stays consistent as you edit.

Does Designrr export more formats than Unplain?

Yes. Designrr exports ePub, Kindle and flipbook formats alongside PDF, and offers an HTML embed on higher tiers. Unplain exports one format, a publish-ready PDF, and is built specifically around that. If you need a Kindle-ready ePub, Designrr covers a job Unplain does not.

Can my AI assistant create an Unplain ebook for me?

Yes. Unplain has an MCP server, so you can connect it to Claude Code or Codex and ask your assistant to create and export an ebook on your account. It is another way in, not a separate product: the same plan and the same limits apply, and the result is a normal project you can open and keep editing.
